Having a medical emergency? Call 911.

Chest pain, stroke symptoms, trouble breathing, severe bleeding, a major head injury, or a bone through the skin all need an emergency room. Do not drive yourself. Emergency rooms are required by federal law to examine and stabilize you regardless of your ability to pay.

Alexander County has no hospital. For anything beyond a primary care visit, its 36,000-odd residents already drive to Hickory — so the question usually isn’t whether to make the trip, it’s where to go once you’re here.

We’re about twenty-five minutes from downtown Taylorsville via NC-90 west and NC-127 south, and closer still if you’re coming from Bethlehem or the Lake Hickory side of the county.

Alexander County residents: urgent care or the emergency room?

With no hospital in the county, both roads lead to Hickory. For a real emergency — chest pain, stroke symptoms, trouble breathing, severe bleeding, a serious head injury — call 911 and let EMS take you to Frye Regional or Catawba Valley Medical Center.

But if you’re already planning the drive for a sprain, a fever, an infection, or a cut that needs stitches, an emergency department is the expensive way to solve it. You’ll wait behind more urgent cases and be billed a facility fee plus a separate physician charge. Our self-pay visit is $165 including one X-ray, and we’ll quote it before treatment starts.

On-site X-ray means one visit

We have digital X-ray in the building. A suspected fracture gets imaged, diagnosed, splinted, and referred for orthopedic follow-up in a single visit. Without on-site imaging, that’s a clinic visit, a separate trip to an imaging center, and a third appointment for results.

Sports physicals for Alexander County students

Taylorsville and Bethlehem students attend Alexander County Schools. NCHSAA requires a current physical before a student can practice or compete. We do them walk-in, same-day, $30 self-pay — worth combining with another errand in Hickory rather than making a separate trip.

Insurance and Medicaid

We accept NC Medicaid, Medicare, and most major insurance plans. Under NC Medicaid the maximum copay for any service is $4, and members under 21 are exempt entirely. If you’re uninsured, our self-pay pricing is published upfront — visits start at $125, and $165 covers your visit plus one X-ray or lab test.
